Best Week Ever (week of July 8)
I spend a ton of time on the internet each week as part of my job. One thing I like to do (when I remember) is to write about five interesting things I read, watched, or listened to over the last 7 days.
This week in Best Week Ever, I've highlighted a new podcast I'm loving, a Washington Post article that had me SHOOK, and the trailer for a new Netflix film I'm excited to watch.
A black principal, four white teens and the 'senior prank' that became a hate crime
This is a bit of a long read, but it's a fascinating one. Four teenagers vandalised their high school with racist language and imagery and it turns out they were caught because their WiFi automatically connected to the school's network with their names and details.
The article will definitely frustrate you in places but it's an interesting one.
Netflix trailer for "The Great Hack"
If you know anything about me, you'll know that issues around data and privacy really fascinate me. I listen to a ton of podcasts about internet privacy and the trailer for "The Great Hack" piqued my interest.
From what I can gather from the trailer, "the Great Hack" talks about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the weaponisation of data, and how information can be commodified and manipulated. ]
Catch "The Great Hack" on Netflix from July 24.
What the Hell Happened to Jovan Hill?
Internet culture is a huge area of interest for me and, if you spend time on Twitter, you're at least peripherally aware of Jovan Hill.
This PAPER Magazine article explores the mystery around his current Twitter suspension and some of the drama that may or may not have contributed to his status as persona non grata at Twitter HQ.
Unwell podcast
I love a good fiction podcast. Unwell isn't a new pod, but it's one I decided to give a try this week. The site describes it as "a fiction podcast about conspiracies, ghosts, and unusual families of blood and choice." So, if that sounds like something you're into, definitely give it a listen.
I'm about 4 episodes in and the storyline and voicework are really engaging so far!
Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin and Sadie Sink Take A Friendship Test
I finished Stranger Things season 3 as soon as it came out and Caleb McLaughlin and Sadie Sink have such a great friendship that also comes across really well on screen.
I loved watching Glamour's friendship test. They're clearly great friends and I'm always fascinated by off-screen dynamics of on-screen couples.
