AOTY - 2018

So, I know it's technically 2019 but I couldn't dive headlong into the New Year without talking about some of my favourite music from 2018. Instead of doing a long-winded and exhaustive list of 20 albums, I thought I'd highlight 5 albums I loved in 2018.

Isolation - Kali Uchis
I think Kali Uchis is so talented. Isolation highlighted her abilities as a singer, songwriter, and visual creator. Isolation has a throwback melancholic quality to it but also sounds really unique against the backdrop of music released last year.

Everything Is Love - The Carters
The Carters surprise dropped this back in June. I remember because we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and I had woken up in Belfast to news of a new release. For The Carters, releasing an album this strong is light work. Beyoncé raps and Jay Z is the world's richest hype man on this really enjoyable release.

Dirty Computer - Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe has never made a bad song or album. Dirty Computer has such an energetic feel to it. JM is clearly an artist with a vision and her lush visuals and innovative sound were an absolute revelation in 2018.

Sweetener - Ariana Grande
I absolutely loved Ariana Grande's Sweetener this year. I played Sweetener on repeat more than any other album in 2018. I played it so much that "God Is A Woman" became my most played song on Spotify. Ariana's voice is incredible, her songs hit in this really visceral way, and I think she is genuinely passionate about the music she makes.

Language - MNEK
MNEK's Language was without a doubt my favourite album of the year. I want to evangelise about Language. MNEK is showstopping, incredible, iconic, and unbelievably talented. I want so much for him this year and beyond. Buy a copy of this album for everyone in your family because Language is THAT album.
