My favourite TV shows of the year (so far)

The Good Fight
The Good Fight might be my favourite thing on TV (that's not really on TV) at the moment. The CBS All Access show is the natural progression of my Good Wife obsession. If you're not watching The Good Fight, I'd highly suggest changing that. Incredibly talented actresses portray whip-smart, funny, and driven attorneys at a Chicago law firm. Fans of The Good Wife will recognise the fast-paced, dynamic nature of each episode, as well as some guest appearances from the good ol' days (Elsbeth Tascioni is back, baby!). Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo, Sarah Steele, and Rose Leslie are all incredible as the main cast and I 100% need about 10 more seasons of this show.

Billions
Billions is a show on Showtime that takes a pretty realistic approach to wealth (not that I would know anything about wealth). Damien Lewis and Paul Giamatti star as Bobby Axelrod and Chuck Rhoades, respectively. The show centers around the complex psyche of a Billionaire, Bobby Axelrod and those in his orbit. Damien Lewis plays the white whale to Paul Giamatti's Moby Dick. Billions is sharp, compelling, and very binge-able.

Killing Eve
Killing Eve's take on the thriller genre is refreshing in a lot of ways. First of all, Sandra Oh is a talent and I'll do a 90 minute Ted Talk on just that. Secondly, Killing Eve unfurls the genre, peeling away the useless trappings of hypermasculinity to tell a story that is both compelling and complex. Jodie Comer is fantastic and believable as the villain. I can't recommend this show enough.

The Good Place

I spent many of my formative years fangirling over Kristen Bell. Veronica Mars will always be my favourite thing she's been in, but The Good Place is a very strong second. The Good Place is genuinely funny, thoughtful, and subversive. This show is unafraid to re-write its own established rules and it never misses an opportunity to go for a good sight gag. I love a good sight gag.

Queer Eye

The Netflix reboot of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy is just a really lovely watch. Each episode is fairly digestible and short and there is absolutely no fighting or unnecessary drama included. There really is something about Queer Eye that feels light and fun while simultaneously tapping into universal emotions and experiences that resonate with a broad audience. One of my favourite shows of the year, hands down.

On My Block
On My Block has been of my favourite offerings for the younger set this whole year. It's a teen dramedy set in a fictional Los Angeles neighbourhood. Everything from hookups, jealousy, friendships, and even violence is addressed on this ultra-diverse Netflix original. The show's soundtrack is killer as well. If you're looking for something new to watch, definitely give this under-the-radar gem a shot.
