New music

Music discovery has always been a huge part of life. I probably realized music discovery was a passion of mine when I was just getting into high school. Back then my friends would burn their finds on CDs for me but, these days, all my music discovery takes place on the internet. Here's where I go to find new tunes.

Twitter

We'll start at Twitter as this is the most obvious. I follow some good music journalists and commentators so I hardly ever miss a new release. I'd say that if you're an aspiring music journalist and you want to stay abreast of all the new releases, find yourself a good group of music journos to follow.

Television

Music discovery via television has always been a huge part of my methods for discovering music. I grew up in the age of the O.C. so music discovery via television comes very naturally to me. Right now I'd say the CW is leading the way forward in terms of music supervision but whoever supervises for shows like Grey's Anatomy is doing a great job as well.

Hillydilly

Hillydilly is one of my favourite websites for new music. They have sections organized by new music and popularity and seems to always be streaming buzzworthy tracks. They're usually ahead of the curve. Seriously, it's very rare that I'll go on the site and encounter anything I've heard before.

indiexmusic.co

I don't quite remember when I found out about this blog but I've known about it for a few years now. I don't know anything about who runs the blog or where they find their own new music, but their recommendations are on point about 85% of the time. If you're looking for a good one off recommendation I would highly suggest this blog.

Commercially curated playlists

You know what I'm talking about. Like when you're at h&m and you hear a song that's quite catchy so you pull out your Soundhound or Shazam app to find out what it is. I'm always on the hunt for good new music so a great tune never escapes my attention. In stores like h&m and Forever 21 the tunes always seem to be legit and, if it sounds good, you can always catch me shazamming the shit out of it.
