Album of The Week - Chance The Rapper (Coloring Book Mixtape)

It feels like the better and better mixtapes become, the smaller and smaller the distinction between a mixtape and an LP is. For instance, last year's If You're Reading This It's Too Late turned out to outclass Drake's competition in both substance and style.

That being said, if you're listening to anything this week, make sure it's Chance's new mixtape, Colouring Book. Colouring Book distinguishes Chance from his competitors and contemporaries in a way rarely seen from a relative newcomer. Chance's release includes cameos from Justin Bieber, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Future and others but isn't a hollow shell of features.

Apart from his technical skill and ability, Chance's work feel's alive. Instrumentally and otherwise, Chance takes a bite out of his competition both in his delivery and lyrical complexity. Gospel influences prove to be the signature of this release, infused tightly in religious references and prayers. "Blessings" especially touts the religious influence of Chance's work.
