Does anyone else remember when Lorde first came on the scene? There was something about her. Something bold and impassioned that people immediately saw in the New Zealand native.
That boldness led to her landing a curating gig for the Hunger Games franchise and a coveted spot on Taylor Swift’s much talked about “girl squad” (sidenote: are we done with ‘girl squads’ yet?). Lorde has had a brilliant run of things and now it’s hard not to see that same potential in Alessia Cara.
Alessia has just released her first full length album (it’s good!) and she is slowly picking up momentum through the usual streams (song covers, interviews, just generally being good at what she does). I feel like people don’t believe me when I say this, but it’s only a matter of time before Alessia Cara’s star becomes too bright to handle.
For starters, her songwriting abilities are phenomenal. She writes with such clarity of voice and sings with an equal measure of passion. People never hesitate to call Taylor Swift a great songwriter but I'd venture to say Alessia's natural abilities are more than comparable. Her new record (seemingly an aggregation of her EP, Four Pink Walls, and some new material) mixes platitudes about youth and love for a thoroughly enjoyable debut album experience . Know-It-All feels polished, yet distinctly DIY--essentially Alessia’s whole vibe.
Alessia is young, hopeful and a perfect presentation of Gen Z. She is following a similar trajectory to fellow DIY brand artists Troye Sivan and Halsey, who have similarly risen from internet fame to prove themselves worthy of mainstream adoration.
In the end it’s not going to be big hooks or massive choruses that propel Alessia to further heights of fame. It will be her ability to continue making fun and personal music about her real life experiences.
