Everything Everything - A+

I had the great fortune of seeing Everything Everything perform live ahead of Get To Heaven’s release. They performed all new material, including their lead singles “Regret” and “Distant Past”. One thing that struck me was the precision of their performance. Not one note was out of place, wobbly or poorly executed. Now that the band has released Get To Heaven, fans can now hear the phenomenally constructed piece of art.

Get To Heaven has been on my watch list for months now. Ever since I found out that the foursome would be releasing new music this year, I’ve kept a watchful eye on them. They did the unlikely thing of only releasing two singles ahead of the album so the suspense was especially high.

Right out of the gate, Everything Everything torpedoes into some pretty complex and cinematic rock with “To The Blade”. “To the Blade” cuts (no pun intended) a sharp contrast against next track “DIstant Past”.

Jonathan HIggs’ vocals completely turn the album on its head. It’s pretty fair to say that Higgs does things with his voice that most within the genre (except maybe Alt-J) don’t do at all. Lyrically, as well, Get To Heaven is almost a performance art piece. “You are a thief and murderer too/ stole the face that you wear from a craven baboon” is just one example of the highly discriptive and absurdist references peppered throughout Get To Heaven.

The album is lengthy, especially when listened to all at once. That doesn’t take away from the sheer power and magnetism that this Manchester based fourpiece have managed to cram into one album. If you do anything this week, make sure its procuring a copy of Get To Heaven.
