Today’s #throwbackthursday is taking all the way to 2003 and the record the changed my life. I know it’s pretty dramatic to say that a single record changed your life. I mean, how do you even decide which records changed your life? If you really think about it, there are people on this earth who can honestly say that an Enya record changed their life.
Either way, Transatlanticism really did change my life. The year was 2006-- a full three years after its initial release. My teenage angst was in full swing and I had just discovered real music. The O.C. was pushing Ben Gibbard real hard and I was buying what they were selling. In my 14 year old mind there was no way Seth Cohen was going to date a loser who didn’t like Death Cab For Cutie, right? RIGHT???
When I talk to people about Death Cab for Cutie I usually get a tepid response. They’ve heard one or two songs or it’s not really their cup of tea. For me, however, Transatlanticism was a huge part of my life. I’m not even kidding when I say that that record took up a solid three years of my life.
That album represented so much of my adolescence; so many mixes made for crushes; so many nights spent at home just listening to it. Over and over and over again.
In my mind it’s the perfect album. So many elements of song writing proficiency and musical prowess have forever cemented this as my favourite album.
I recently shared this album with a friend and it still managed to spark that old teenage excitement in me. Every lyric, every chord progression, every tinge of irony and sadness really hit home for me almost 10 years later. I can honestly say I’m still deeply in love with this record and I don’t foresee a time I won’t be in love with it.
What are your guys’ favourite records?
