Haim - Something To Tell You

If you thought Haim's second album was going to be anything other than addictive hooks, killer choruses, and tight harmonies, you clearly don't know these girls. There's no sophomore slump for the trio, as Something To Tell You jettisons us clear into summer alt-pop season.

Something To Tell You has a familiar quality. Songs like "Nothing's Wrong" and "You Never Knew" double down on the Stevie Nicks-ishness we've come to expect from the sisters.

As much as the girls like to recall the sounds of a bygone era of music, they also try on more modern flavours on songs like "Walking Away" and "Right Now".

Unsurprisingly, the songwriting on Something To Tell You is emotional, honest, and personal. The girls go full John Hughes on "Ready For You" and tap into a defiant vulnerability on "Kept Me Crying". In another life "Night So Long" is a song Molly Ringwald sadly dances to at the end of an emotional 80s teen film.

Something To Tell You feels nostalgic and refreshingly modern at the same time. Haim clearly have a sound, and they haven't departed too sharply from it. Haim took what was amazing about Days Are Gone, added a bit of depth and maturity to it, and embraced the appeal of a slow burn.

Hands down one of my favourite releases of the year.
