As a person who grew up listening to Bikini Kill, The Distillers, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, female fronted rock is exciting. It's still exciting, whether it's the likes of Brody Dalle, Bethany Cosentino, or Ellie Rowsell behind the mic.
Toronto-based Dilly Dally is exciting. They make me feel the same way I felt after hearing Coral Fang for the first time in the 7th grade. It's been a little over a year since the talented four-piece released their debut album, Sore. But, for anyone who hasn't heard the brilliant record, here is your PSA: It's really freakin' good.
Their sound is big, deliberate, and firmly rooted in punk. Dilly Dally lean on wonderfully familiar sounding guitar riffs that are both accessible and pop-adjacent , but still edgy as fuck.
The music has such a"gimme more" quality to it. Sonically, they make interesting 90s tinged rock; lyrically they employ some of the raucousness and repetition that link them firmly to the genre of punk.
And, if you haven't heard their rendition of Drake's "Know Yourself", performed live at SXSW, please do yourself a favor.
