Well cast, well written, and well performed, The Crown, from the outset, lacks something. Perhaps it is the subject matter; or perhaps the dreary backdrop of one of Britain's most uncertain times, but The Crown fails to captivate in any meaningful way in its first four episodes.
Understandably, the difficulty here almost certainly lies with the subjects of this biopic. Phillip (Matt Smith) is unlikable as the overly confident Duke of Edinburgh and Elizabeth comes off as an unremarkable young monarch who has her title thrust upon her.
Despite the young Elizabeth's role as the clear protagonist, Claire Foy's performance falls away behind the character deficiencies of each and every one of her co-stars.
I'm only on episode four, so there is a decent chance The Crown could improve markedly. But, for now, I am yet to find a reason to be excited or feel sympathetic for a single character.
