Earlier this week I came across a folk artist called Lánre and since then I’ve basically had her on repeat. She’s a British-Nigerian singer who fuses afro and folk elements for a perfect blend of soothing contemporary music.
My family is Nigerian as well so a lot of the imagery (wax print, head ties, beaded jewelry) is really familiar to me.
Her latest video for “Memories”, taken from her EP Home showcases her impeccable vocals as well as the compelling bed of instrumentals she has chosen as her backdrop. Originally written for an Alzheimer’s awareness charity, the track comes across with a glimmer of hopefulness as well as nostalgia.
Well paced and culturally familiar, “Memories” is a definite winner for me.
