Gwenny don't lie

By now a lot of us will have heard of #Gwengate and Ji Nilsson. Ji Nilsson is, of course, the Swedish pop/r&b artist that Gwen Stefani has been accused of stealing her latest single ‘Baby, Don’t Lie’ from. I’ve always been a fan Gwen Stefani and I think her solo stuff is really strong (as is her work with No Doubt) but there’s really no denying the similarity of ‘Baby Don’t Lie’ and ‘Heartbreakfree’.

I first discovered Ji Nilsson a few months ago when I was writing about her for soundchips. Heartbreakfree mixes a lot of pop, r&b, and dancehall elements for a really sparkly, girly production that is insanely catchy and worth a listen.

Gwen Stefani’s ‘Baby Don’t Lie’ is markedly different, a little more polished, commercial, and radio ready. It is, however, difficult to ignore the opening beat and subsequent production throughout the track. This, of course isn’t the first time an artist has been found to have similar production as another artist and it certainly won’t be the last.

While it’s kind of upsetting that someone on Gwen’s team likely heard Ji Nilsson’s track and thought the production was decent, enough to steal, it blatantly speaks to the fact that Ji Nilsson’s following is rather small compared to Gwen Stefani’s. Whoever produced the track likely thought that no one would notice but it turns out that Ji Nilsson has got some pretty vigilant fans.

Either way, whether you think it’s eerily similar or just a fluke, why not give Ji Nilsson’s track a listen and support a young artist?
