It was my birthday earlier this week and, to celebrate, my boyfriend took me out on the Thames for dinner and drinks in Old Street. While in Old Street we visited a bar that we went to on my birthday the previous year. Long story short, the drinks were bad and overpriced and the music was way too loud. Before long, I found myself saying something that I think we can all relate to on some level. “I wish we were at home watching Seinfeld.”
Today’s flashback friday is a look at one of my favourite shows: Seinfeld. Seinfeld first aired in 1989 and enjoyed a run of nearly 10 years. Based on real people in Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David’s lives, Seinfeld’s appeal crossed geographic, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic borders.
To this day I have only met one person who didn’t like Seinfeld and that person is my mother who thinks Frasier is funnier (I can’t even begin to express how wrong she is). Seinfeld’s take on the mundane happenings of everyday life is a narrative that had never been explored on television in that capacity and was not seen again until ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. The dream team of Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld gave us classic episodes such as The Puffy Shirt, The Soup Nazi, and The Limo and introduced us to unconventional characters like Kramer and George (who was based on Larry David Himself).
If you’ve never been a fan of Seinfeld and need a little bit more convincing, here are 5 reasons that Seinfeld is better than going to a bar.
1. Seinfeld is cheaper
Instead of guzzling down £8.50 cocktails, stay at home, crack a beer, and spend some time with Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer.
2. Elaine is a style icon
A lot of people consider Sarah Jessica Parker’s character on ‘Sex and the City’ as their style icon but I consider a different New Yorker to be mine. Since day one Elaine Benes has killed it on the style front. #normcore
3. Seinfeld is funnier than your real life friends
Sorry, it had to be said.
5. You don’t need an ID to watch Seinfeld
How annoying is it to be 22 and still get ID’d?
