New (ish) Music Roundup

Cat Power //Sun

B-

As an artist, Cat Power (Chan Marshall) is the queen of the alternative love song. Whispered epitaphs about relationships gone awry and true love is what Cat Power does best. Sun is no different. Having cut her teeth in the late 90s alongside acts like Alanis Morrisette and Liz Phair, Marshall deftly puts a new and interesting spin on the girl rocker sound. Much of the composition on Sun is impossibly delicate yet the subject matter comes off as gritty and eerie. Some tracks are a tad ambitious and overreaching, unfortunately sacrificing the overall sentiment but the product is a solid effort from a legendary musician. Standout tracks include ‘Cherokee’ and ‘Manhattan’.

G.O.O.D. Music //Cruel Summer

A+

Cruel Summer,  featuring much of the G.O.O.D music crew, is a rollercoaster ride of immaculate and precise composition mixed with gentle reminders of the irreverent nature of the project. Less than 10 minutes in and you are reminded of just how powerful Kanye West’s ‘Clique’ truly is.  The entire album is an exercise in the progressive and experimental nature of today’s hip hop scene as well as the versatility of the Kanye West brand. Standout tracks include every track on this album because it is literally a perfect thing.

Two Door Cinema Club//Beacon

A

It’s kind of weird to think that Beacon is only Two Door Cinema’s second full length LP. It’s weird to imagine this because they are just doing everything right. Beacon is no exception.  There seems to be no sophomore slump here with Two Door Cinema Club holding steadfastly to a precise and well rounded sound on nearly each track. The album is tightly layered with buzzing guitar riffs and a powerful sense synchronicity in its production.  The project seems to be a carefully produced and well crafted effort and the trio really seem to come into their own on the slower paced songs. Standout tracks include ‘Handshake’, ‘The World is Watching’ and ‘Spring’
