Southern Air
C
I can remember being 14 years old and thinking that Ocean Avenue was one of the
best things I’d ever heard. Somehow Southern Air doesn’t live up to that. I
want to say this album is not as good because I’ve grown up and can’t
appreciate it properly, but a part of me thinks this album just isn’t that
good.
Bloc Party//Four
B-
Another band I grew up with. Razor sharp
guitar riffs, vague lyrics delivered in distorted vocal stylings, killer rhythm
section. My main problem with this release is that, when I was younger, Bloc
Party was so ahead of the game. They defined so much of my musical aesthetic.
Had this come out when my musical taste was just forming, I definitely think
they would have just been another band. That being said, there are a few decent
tracks on this. Check their Soundcloud.
Purity Ring//
Shrines
A
I think my taste in music is so broad and saturated that it is hard for me to
hear something and be completely blown away. This was one of those albums that
I had an immediate and visceral reaction to the first time I heard it. The
beats on this are cray. The sound is so thick and layered that, at its heaviest
parts, it might be difficult to distinguish exactly what you are hearing. Most
of the beats sound like restructured hip hop beats and slow jams. The
arrangement of each individual track is so meticulous and dope that only a
great deal of construction could have been able to produce Shrines. Such a
solid album. Don’t sleep on Purity Ring.
